The climate on the Mar Menor coast is gentle. Mild winters with hot summers fanned by refreshing easterly breezes. The annual average temperature is in the region of 18 degrees centigrade. There is little rainfall with fewer than 40 rainy days per year. San Javier (location of one of the airports) not far from La Manga only registers 332 mm of rain per year on average. Sunshine is guaranteed for usually 320 days each year. Rain is concentrated in spring and autumn, when it can be torrential.
You might think the dry weather would leave a barren landscape, far from it. The area is very fertile and is a major producer of fruit and vegetables for major supermarket chains in Europe including Sainsbury. Certain Ibero-African plant species flourish, the sandarac tree (Tertaclinis articulata) and the palmi-to (Chamaerotops).
Average of over 300 days of sunshine with summer temperatures in the 30's and average winter temperatures of 17°.
